WEAR A STATEMENT

A line is a dot out for a walk.
- Paul Klee

Timelines, deadlines, airlines, bloodlines, shorelines, borderline, hairlines, waistline, hemline, neckline. Oh, there are lines all over.
Line is probably the most fundamental of all the elements of art and design. It is the starting place for most artistic creation whether one is starting a fine drawing or painting or even sketching ideas for a sculpture. Most design begins with line.

In fact, as one of the seven visual elements of art—along with form (volume or mass), shape, color, value, texture, and space—the line is a hallmark of the arts.

Line is not necessarily an artificial creation of the artist or designer; it exists in nature as a structural feature such as branches, or as surface design, such as striping on a tiger or a seashell. Those are organic lines.
As lines winds across a paper or canvas, this continuous band can emit powerful emotions. Lines communicates emotion and states of mind through its character and direction. The variations of meaning generally relate to our bodily experience of line and direction. Horizontal linesuggests a feeling of rest or relaxation. Vertical linescommunicate a feeling of loftiness and spirituality. Horizontal and vertical lines in combination communicate stability and firmness. Diagonal lines suggest a feeling of movement or direction.

Each thread, seam, and row of knitting is a line. Spaghetti straps, leather belts, gold chains, ribbons, zipper tape, arms, and legs all take on linear forms that can twist, bend, surround, follow, border, crease, slash, but somehow remain lines. Lines are the result of edges meeting; they carry the eye through time and space, marking separations, taking us on a journey, wrapping, fitting, enveloping the human form. In these artistic necktie, observe the thread that make up the fabric. Run your fingers through it. Now enjoy combining them with the artist’s paint strokes and the Swarovski crystals.
